County Boundary Vintages: Why the Map Year Matters
Learn what a geographic vintage means, when county boundaries and codes change, and how to keep county maps and statistical data compatible.
What “vintage” means on a county map
The vintage is the point in time represented by a geographic file or statistical release. A map labelled 2025 is intended to represent county geography from that release, even if the page displaying it was published later.
Vintage is more precise than simply calling a map “current.” It lets another researcher identify the same boundary definitions and understand which records should join to the shapes.
County boundaries can change
County-level geography is relatively stable, but changes do occur. States can alter boundaries, consolidate governments, rename units, or change which areas the Census Bureau treats as county-equivalents. Codes can be introduced or retired when the underlying geography changes.
Connecticut is a useful recent example. The Census Bureau replaced the state’s former eight county-equivalents with nine planning regions for federal statistical geography. A dataset organized around the old counties will not join cleanly to a map organized around the new planning regions.
Geometry year and data year are different
A county boundary file and a population estimate do not need the same publication date to be useful together, but their geographic definitions must be compatible.
For example, a population product can describe estimates for 2024 while being published in 2025. Its documentation identifies the geography used. Do not assume that the number in a filename always refers to the same concept across products.
What happens when vintages do not match
Common symptoms include:
- rows with no matching shape;
- shapes with no matching statistical record;
- retired FIPS codes;
- a total that changes after records are grouped;
- duplicated or missing Connecticut areas;
- labels that differ even though the general area looks similar.
A map may still render without warning, so unmatched-record checks are essential.
A reliable update workflow
- Record the exact source URL and filename for the current geometry.
- Read the source documentation for changes in county-equivalent geography.
- Preserve FIPS and GEOID values as text, including leading zeroes.
- Join the new boundary table to the intended statistical dataset.
- Count unmatched rows in both directions.
- Compare totals by state against the source documentation.
- Visually inspect states with known special systems, including Alaska, Connecticut, Louisiana, and Virginia.
- Publish the new vintage and retrieval date with the map.
Should an older map be removed?
Not always. Historical maps can be valuable when clearly labelled and paired with data from the same period. The problem is not age by itself; it is presenting an old geography as current or combining incompatible vintages without explanation.
For a general reference atlas, the latest stable official release is normally the best default. Historical versions should have a distinct purpose and clear labelling rather than competing with the current page for the same query.
Cartographic files versus TIGER/Line files
The Census Bureau publishes multiple geographic products. Cartographic boundary files are simplified for mapping and faster display. TIGER/Line files contain more detailed geometry and attributes for GIS work.
Both can represent the same broad vintage while serving different scales. Select the level of detail required by the task; more coordinate points do not automatically make a web reference map more useful.
How this atlas handles updates
United States County Maps records the source filename in its data-generation process, filters the national file to the 50 states and District of Columbia, and checks that 3,144 county-level units are produced for the current 2025 release. State pages expose the resulting FIPS codes and identify the vintage near the map.
The methodology page is updated when the source release or rendering process changes materially.
